Princeville Resort Rebranding to St. Regis
January 2008

Princeville Resort will soon begin renovations of its 252-room luxury cliff top property on the north shore of Kaua‘i. The renovations will increase the status of the Starwood property, which is currently a four-star resort. It will be re-branded as a St. Regis, the hotel company’s most exclusive brand once renovations are complete. Completion is scheduled for March 2009.

Koloa Landing on Kaua‘i Will be Outrigger Condominium Collection’s Newest Addition
January 2008

Outrigger Enterprises Group will manage Koloa Landing at Po‘ipu Beach, a new 24-acre, luxury resort condominium project currently under construction on the southern tip of Kaua‘i. The first phase of the $285 million project is slated for completion in 2009. Koloa Landing will be comprised of 323 upscale resort condominiums with luxury resort amenities and services.

ANARA Spa Renovations Complete
January 2008

The ANARA Spa at the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa has completed its garden spa expansion. At more than 45,000 square feet, this is now the largest spa on Kaua‘i, and the second largest in the state. The garden spa is set amidst a lush garden, waterfalls and serene pools. The multi-million dollar expansion added five open-air bungalows featuring lava rock showers and a steam grotto.

Aloha Airlines Begins New Flights from California
January 2008

In January, Aloha began nonstop service from San Diego to Lihu‘e four times weekly on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday it will also fly nonstop to Lihu‘e from Orange County, with direct one-stop service offered the other four days of the week.

New Activities at Kilohana Plantation
December 2007

Kilohana Plantation in Lihu‘e has created a new luau, which is open to the general public on Tuesdays. Kilohana Plantation will also be creating a rum distillery slated to for completion in summer 2008. It will be made from molasses from Gay & Robinson sugar plantation on Kaua‘i’s west side. The Kilohana Railway Tour also has a new 3-hour; 40 minute combination railway tour and hike. This allows participants to get off the train, feed the goats and pigs, hike through the fruit orchards and gardens, then board the train to finish the tour.

Coconut Marketplace Plans $5 Million Renovation
December 2007

M & J Wilkow Ltd. recently purchased the Coconut Marketplace in Waipouli. The company is planning a $5 million renovation of the property including new paint and roofing. The multi-colored plantation-era pipes in the common spaces will be removed and replaced with Asian-inspired, landscaped open space.

Kaua‘i Programs Rank in Islands Magazine’s “Blue List”
December 2007

Islands magazine recently compiled a “blue list” of the top 100 leaders in responsible tourism. Kaua‘i County’s Kaua‘i Made program was recognized for using products created with on-island materials including unique products such as passion fruit wasabi mustard, koa wood paddles and shell jewelry. Limahuli Garden and Preserve was also honored for preserving culture through restoration including repopulating the rare alula plant and rediscovering and propagating a native hibiscus once believed extinct.

Delta Offers New Nonstop Flight From Los Angeles to Lihu‘e
November 2007

Delta Air Lines has added a new nonstop flight between its Los Angeles gateway and Lihu‘e, effective June 5, 2008. Flights will depart from Los Angeles daily at noon, to arrive in Lihu‘e at 2:50 p.m. Return flights will leave Lihu‘e at 8:50 p.m. to arrive in Los Angeles the following day at 5:10 a.m.

Alaska Airlines to Offer Seattle - Kaua‘i Flights
October 2007

Alaska Airlines now operates daily nonstop service between Seattle and Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i. The Seattle-Kaua‘i flights started on October 28 and flies on a 157-passenger Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The carrier, which has a 75-year history, says its customers had been asking for Hawai‘i service for many years.

Limahuli Gardens Honored with Hawai‘i Tourism Authority Award
August 2007

Limahuli Gardens on Kaua‘i’s north shore was honored with a coveted Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA) Koa Award. This award recognizes the organization’s commitment to perpetuating and preserving Hawai‘i’s host culture. The preserve was most recognized for developing Hawaiian Knowledge by preservation of natural resources via research, hands-on work and educational opportunities. Their work has led to the restoration of numerous taro terraces, the collection and perpetuation of rare and endangered Native Hawaiian plants and the creation of educational tours.

The Ko‘a Kea Hotel & Resort (former Po‘ipu Beach Hotel) Construction Underway

The Ko‘a Kea Hotel & Resort is undergoing construction and will be completed in summer 2008. The 121-guestroom beachfront hotel will include a fresh new design including guestrooms and suites, as well as a stunning new restaurant and luxury spa facility. Safari Helicopter Tours’ New Tour Takes Visitors to View Rare Exotic Plants

Safari Helicopters will soon transport visitors to a 10-acre site by Olokele Canyon, to visit a new rare exotic plant refuge. From the helicopter landing pad visitors can photograph mountain scenery and experience an in-depth presentation on natural and human history and its connection to the Pacific region. Malama Ola Events Share Cultural Healing Practices

A new event titled Malama Ola (meaning “to take care of life”) will demonstrate healing and meditative practices from diverse cultures during a two-day series of events on October 20 and 21, 2007 at the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa in Po‘ipu, Kaua‘i. Malama Ola will teach health-related practices from the Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Indian cultures. This will address indigenous healing traditions, health risks, antioxidants, physiology, yoga as a healing practice and nutritional cooking.
