What's New on KauaiPrinceville Resort Rebranding to St. Regis January 2008 Princeville Resort will soon begin renovations of its 252-room luxury cliff top property on the north shore of Kaua‘i. The renovations will increase the status of the Starwood property, which is currently a four-star resort. It will be re-branded as a St. Regis, the hotel company’s most exclusive brand once renovations are complete. Completion is scheduled for March 2009. The first phase of the $285 million project is slated for completion in 2009. Koloa Landing will be comprised of 323 upscale resort condominiums with luxury resort amenities and services. At more than 45,000 square feet, this is now the largest spa on Kaua‘i, and the second largest in the state. The garden spa is set amidst a lush garden, waterfalls and serene pools. The multi-million dollar expansion added five open-air bungalows featuring lava rock showers and a steam grotto. On Tuesday and Thursday it will also fly nonstop to Lihu‘e from Orange County, with direct one-stop service offered the other four days of the week. Kilohana Plantation will also be creating a rum distillery slated to for completion in summer 2008. It will be made from molasses from Gay & Robinson sugar plantation on Kaua‘i’s west side. The Kilohana Railway Tour also has a new 3-hour; 40 minute combination railway tour and hike. This allows participants to get off the train, feed the goats and pigs, hike through the fruit orchards and gardens, then board the train to finish the tour. The company is planning a $5 million renovation of the property including new paint and roofing. The multi-colored plantation-era pipes in the common spaces will be removed and replaced with Asian-inspired, landscaped open space. Kaua‘i County’s Kaua‘i Made program was recognized for using products created with on-island materials including unique products such as passion fruit wasabi mustard, koa wood paddles and shell jewelry. Limahuli Garden and Preserve was also honored for preserving culture through restoration including repopulating the rare alula plant and rediscovering and propagating a native hibiscus once believed extinct. The Seattle-Kaua‘i flights started on October 28 and flies on a 157-passenger Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The carrier, which has a 75-year history, says its customers had been asking for Hawai‘i service for many years. This award recognizes the organization’s commitment to perpetuating and preserving Hawai‘i’s host culture. The preserve was most recognized for developing Hawaiian Knowledge by preservation of natural resources via research, hands-on work and educational opportunities. Their work has led to the restoration of numerous taro terraces, the collection and perpetuation of rare and endangered Native Hawaiian plants and the creation of educational tours.
